How to: Scoring Chess Position?

djd011 asked:

I have recently gotten back into playing chess daily and lately all my efforts not spent playing chess have been spent trying to improve my game.

I was reading up on some historical games and saw moves where players would trade capital pieces for position. I started to ask how one values, or scores, position. I have seen some questions where people ask others to evaluate chess positions. These posts got me wondering if there is a way to do this calculation by hand, or a source that has the code for such calculations done by computers. I would prefer to learn to do this by myself…lol

I really appreciate any help you all can offer.
Thank you,

In general there is is no ’scoring’ of a position.

There is however an evaluation of a position. Which players will do all the time to their own game or to one they have observed together in a tournament hall.

They might say xyz is material down for no compensation, or that xyz is winning positional even though material down, or that the game is playing itself. More complicated variations of these themes will involve likely move scenarios. Other then that check out the link.
